You’ve been nervous before. If you’re lucky, you’ve felt butterflies in your stomach. Perhaps you’ve even been moved to tears as fear and tension rise. This is a sign that you’re on the right track.
I got to speak about this and the benefit of fear on the Courage is a Skill podcast.
To be clear the first sign that you’re on the right track is a feeling of excitement and a sense of expansion. Something deep within knows it’s for you, even if it seems unrealistic or like a big leap.
It’s when you begin to follow through that fear rears its scary head. But, as my two year old says, “It’s not scary mama!” And, in the case of fear, it doesn’t have to be if you understand that:
Fear is a useful alarm system NOT a navigation system.
Fear alerts in the form of:
1. Doubt that there’s some work to be done.
2. Insecurity to remind us to take a few breaths and get centered.
3. Resistance to let you know the work you’re about to do is the work that you’re meant to do.
As Stephen Pressfield says, “Resistance is the response of the frightened, petty, small-time ego to the brave, generous, magnificence impulse of the creative self.”
Examples as well as ways to move forward are once again… on the podcast😉
So when I find my stomach churning, tears of fear rolling down my face, nervous energy before I present, or I see procrastination sneaking in, I take a breath and smile because I know, I’m on the right track.
Once you’ve decoded and disarmed the alarm, turn your navigation system back on (breathe). This is the calm, centered, intuitive, and magnetic part of you.
Now you can CHOOSE to move in the direction of that which first excited you.
I choose to step into that which I so fear. In this place of growth I feel alive.
Over to you:
What’s your relationship with fear?
Do you have any tools or tricks to overcome it?
I share my tricks on practicing fear in on this podcast. Check it out my friend!
Lots of love,
